No one will steal under my watch – Buhari

President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari yesterday assured Nigerians that he would run a transparent and accountable government.
He also vowed that anyone who embezzles public fund under his government would face the music.
Buhari gave this assurance during a town hall meeting in Yola on Wednesday.
According to him, corruption would be fought to a standstill, as well as insecurity and enhancing educational development.
He also attributed most of the social ills ruining the country to dearth of education.
The incoming president observed that for Nigeria to get out of its current situation , the people must persevere in nation building, adding that in the face of the massive decay in the system, tackling Nigeria’s problems would be a daunting task.
He also stated that the country was endowed with human and natural resources, ‘’but unfortunately the resources were mismanaged and squandered, leading to the present situation in the land”.
Buhari, however, noted that with the support, sacrifice and resolve of Nigerians to effect change, the country will be the better for all.
“We will run a transparent government and in doing so I will not favour my family,’’ he said.
The President-Elect thanked Nigerians for casting their votes for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the last presidential and National Assembly polls.
Gen. Buhari who was accompanied by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Senator Olurinimbe Mamora, had earlier visited the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa.

Court refuses to stop Fayose’s impeachment

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and his deputy, Kolapo Olusola, have raced to a Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the 19 All Progressives Congress members of the state House of Assembly from impeaching them.
But they met a brick wall as the judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, turned down their request and granted only the prayers contained in their ex parte application relating to the service of the court processes on the defendants.
Fayose and Olusola, in the ex parte application, asked for an interim order stopping   the impeachment notice served on them and the moves to remove them from office.
Rather than granting the prayers for interim injunction, Justice Mohammed ordered the defendants in the suit, including the Speaker of the House, Adewale Omirin, and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, to appear in his court on April 16.
They are to show cause why the order of interim injunctions being sought by the plaintiffs   should not be granted.
Apart from Omirin and   Daramola, the other defendants in the suit are the Inspector-General of Police,   Suleiman Abba, and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The   plaintiffs, apart from Fayose and Olusola, are the House of Assembly and Olugbemi   Dele, who was appointed by seven Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers as their speaker.
Counsel for the plaintiffs,   Ahmed Raji, had in the ex parte application dated April 7 urged the court to set aside the impeachment notice and   restrain the defendants from taking any further steps in that direction.
The lawyer argued that the impeachment notice signed by Omirin amounted to impersonating the “incumbent speaker (Dele).’’
He said, “The kernel of our complaint is that a former speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, in the person of the 1st respondent (Omirin) is trying to impersonate the 1st plaintiff (Dele), who is the current speaker of the parliament.”
Part of the orders sought by the plaintiffs are: “An   injunction restraining the 1st defendant (Dele) and other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff (House of Assembly) from further taking any step or engagining in unlawful activities relating to the impeachment of Ayodele Fayose and Kolapo Olusola as governor and deputy governor of Ekiti State.
“An interim order of injunction restraining the Chief Judge   from taking any step or action in relation to the request of the 1st defendant (Omirin) for the purpose of appointing a panel of seven persons to investigate the purported allegations of gross misconduct against   Fayose and   Olusola.
“An interim order restraining the police from continuing to abet, give cover, protection or lend credence to the activities of the 1st defendant and other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff for self-help in disruption of legislative proceedings in the   House of Assembly.
“An interim order   setting aside the purported notice of impeachment and all the steps taken by the 1st defendant and other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff in relation to the purported issuance and service of the notice of impeachment for the purpose of commencing and concluding impeachment proceedings against   Fayose and Olusola.”
The plaintiffs had urged the court to grant the prayers and make the interim injunctions to subsist pending the determination of their motion on notice for interlocutory injunctions seeking the same set of prayers.
Raji urged the court to grant the prayers “in the interest of justice, public order, peace and safety of the people of the state.”
But the judge   rather than granting the interim injunctions ordered the parties to appear in court to convince him on why the plaintiffs’ prayers   should not be granted.
Justice Mohammed ruled, “The order is hereby made directing the 1st to 4th defendants (Omirin, IG , INEC and Ekiti CJ) to appear before this court on April 16, 2015 and show cause why the interim order sought by the plaintiffs via an ex parte motion dated April 7, 2015 should not be made by this court.”
The court granted leave to serve Omirin and Justice Daramola, who reside in Ekiti State, outside jurisdiction.
It also ordered that Omirin and the   CJ be served through advertisement in a national newspaper.
It also made a separate order that the CJ be served with processes of court through the office of the Chief Registrar of of the Ekiti State High Court.
In their main suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/302/2015, the plaintiffs are seeking nine prayers among which is “an order setting aside the purported notice of impeachment and all steps taken by the 1st defendant (Omirin) with other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff   in relation to the purported issuance and service of the said notice of impeachment for the purpose of commencing and concluding the impeachment proceedings against   Fayose and   Olusola, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”
The move by the APC lawmakers to sack Fayose and Olusola had led to   mayhem in parts of the state on Monday and Tuesday.
During protests on Tuesday by Fayose supporters, a man, Modupe Olaiya, was shot dead in Efon Alaaye.
Olaiya’s death became a subject of controversy with Fayose accusing the APC lawmakers being culpable in a in a petition he sent to the IG.
“The APC lawmakers were escorted by five fully armed riot policemen, who I later discovered   were brought from MOPOL 20 in Lagos State,” he added.
He listed the mobile policemen as Sgt Oyelakin Zacchaeus (F/No 386073), Cpl Adewuya Clement (F/No 396903), Cpl James Ogunji (F/No 386976), Cpl Ebute Michael (F/No 343469) and Cpl. Ibrahim Zock (F/No 235510).
Fayose   urged Abbah to investigate the role of the policemen in the whole saga.
He said, “To my surprise, instead of the police arresting the lawmakers, they were allowed to return to Osogbo, Osun State where they came from.
“As I write, the entire Efon Alaaye community is tense, with the people expecting justice to prevail on the gruesome murder of Modupe Olaiya.
“It is therefore on this note, and most importantly, the need to restore the confidence of the people in the police that I implore that you use your good offices to order a thorough investigation into the murder.
“It is also important that the involvement of the above listed mobile policemen is ascertained as they were not from Ekiti State and were not deployed to escort the lawmakers to the state by the   state police command.”
Olaiya’s   mother,   Apeke, told journalists in company with her daughter-in-law, Yinka, that one of the lawmakers killed her son.
She said, “It (killing) happened at Fabo, at Efon Junction on the way to Ijebu-Ijesha.
“They said he (lawmaker) was coming with some OPC (Odua Peoples Congress) members from Lagos and they made a detour in Osun State, but they were coming to Ekiti through Ijebu-Ijesha.
“What I learnt was that when the convoy   arrived at Fabo Junction, they opened fire on the protesters   who had mounted a roadblock, claiming that that Efon people were heady and stubborn.
“I was told that my son had hidden behind a car when everyone else had scampered to safety. He was shot in the back while crawling out of danger to the bush.
“The vehicle with which he was being taken to the hospital ran out of fuel on the way, they continued with a motorcycle, which also ran out of fuel at Adagba farm settlement. They eventually got another motorcycle with which they got him to Odufunke Hospital, where the doctor had to call the police to ascertain his identity, having been brought as a gunshot victim.
“While all these were going on, my son had started to foam from the mouth and while they were trying to give him blood, he gave up the ghost. His pregnant wife, Yinka, has two children. I don’t know what to do now. Olaiya is my fourth child and had been the sponsor of the family.”
She spoke at the Government House in Ado Ekiti.
But the APC lawmakers accused the governor of inducing the mother and other family members of the deceased to make the claim.
According to them, Olaiya was felled by soldiers’ bullets at Efon Alaaye.
“We have confirmed that Fayose gave the woman huge sum of money and asked her to start crying, rolling on the floor with persistent mentioning of Hon. Ogundele as the one who shot the boy,” they said in a statement by Omirin’s Special Adviser, Media,   Wole Olujobi.
The statement added, “Modupe Olaiya was actually killed by security agents while thugs armed with guns and other dangerous weapons massed up at the Itawure security checkpoint violently protesting and blocking the route through which the 19 APC lawmakers were coming to Ado Ekiti.
“Residents of Efon Alaaye have confirmed that the incident happened long before the lawmakers arrived at the checkpoint when the thugs became unruly and started shooting at the security agents.
“In the exchange of gunfire, Olaiya was felled and taken to the morgue. His body was later shown to residents by government officials alleging that Ogundele, who was nowhere near the scene, was implicated.
“The lawmakers were not even aware of the incident because they were still far away from the spot when the incident happened. So, it will be mischievous if the lawmakers are linked with the incident.
“Nigerians should recall that the Ekiti State High Court once dismissed Fayose as an incorrigible liar and peddler of mischief. Nigerians should therefore note the deceit involved in this show of shame. Is it the family of the deceased that should visit the governor in his office or the governor that should visit them to sympathise with them  in their house?
“This is another propaganda typical of Fayose’s mischief to get at the opposition. What Fayose is doing is to stoke crisis that will lead to the arrest of Hon. Ogundele so that he will not be around on Saturday for the House of Assembly poll in which the man is seeking re-election.
“This is another stunt from a man who trades and trafficks in lies and mischief as essential instrument of governance.”
No plan to shift Ekiti election –INEC
Meanwhile, INEC has said that there is no plan to postpone Saturday’s election in Ekiti State despite the crisis rocking there.
It said the crisis had nothing to do with the commission’s preparation for the election.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the commission,   Kayode Idowu, disclosed this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday.
Idowu said, “INEC is not involved in the crisis going on in the state and we have no plan to shift the election.’’

We are taking appropriate action on Akiolu – DSS

The Department of State Services has said that it is taking appropriate action over the alleged threat of Ndigbo in Lagos by Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.
Answering questions at the National Information Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, spokesperson for the secret service, Marylyn Ogar, said the service was handling the matter though she refused to give the details of the action being taken.
Ogar said, “We are taking appropriate action. Yesterday, the service had once again warned all Nigerians not to stoke the embers of discord within the country.
“If the presidential election had come and gone successfully, we wouldn’t want people to begin to whip up sentiments unnecessarily. So we are handling it.”
Meanwhile, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has directed a committee comprising notable traditional rulers in the state to meet with Oba Akiolu over the monarch’s recent death threat to Ndigbo resident in Lagos State.
Following widespread reactions to the monarch’s warning to Ndigbo in Lagos to either vote the APC governorship candidate in the state, Akinwunmi Ambode, or risk imminent death in the lagoon, Okorocha charged the committee, which will be led by the chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri, with the task of resolving the matter immediately.
The committee is expected to have a one-on-one discussion with Akiolu over the threat and to extract a commitment from him.
The governor, who is also the chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, noted that it was not enough to accept Akiolu’s denial of threatening Ndigbo without traditional rulers from the South-East meeting with him to discuss the controversy and the way forward in the long existing relationship between the Igbo in Lagos and their host community.
Also, the Imo State Peoples Democratic Party officially reacted to Akiolu’s utterance on Wednesday.
The party described the monarch’s threat to Ndigbo as an empty, malicious and unwarranted threat.
In a statement released by the party, a copy of which was made available to one of our correspondents, the Imo PDP condemned the death threat, saying it was unacceptable.
The party wondered why a monarch would be speaking for a political party.
It urged Ndigbo resident in Lagos and other parts of the country to come out en masse and vote according to their conscience on Saturday.

Nanny absconds with three kids one day after employment

The Orekoya family on Lawanson Road, Surulere, Lagos State says, presently, it has no reason to be happy.
This is because a nanny employed on March 7 by the household disappeared with three children a day after she was employed.
The names of the missing children are Aderomola, (11 months), Adedamola (4 years) and Demola (6 years).
The nanny, Mary Akinloye, a 23-year-old indigene of Ibadan, Oyo State, was said to have been contracted via OLX, an online sales portal.
The children’s mother, Adebisi, toldPUNCH Metro that Akinloye looked older than her age and that her claim that she was an indigene of Oyo State was questionable because of her accent.
She explained that the family had a nanny, who suddenly stopped coming to work after observing her annual leave.
She said the family subsequently put up a post on OLX, seeking the service of a new nanny.
She said, “We had someone who was taking care of the kids before now. But the woman did not show up on Saturday and Sunday and we urgently needed someone to assist because we were going to resume work on Monday. We were disturbed and that was why I posted the information on OLX.
“She (Akinloye) called us and said she was interested. She said she was 23 years. I agreed to employ her in the interim because I really did not like the fact that she was young. She agreed to collect between N10, 000 to N15,000 even though our former nanny collected N25,000.
“I left her at home this morning (Wednesday) around 7.30am. It was around 1pm that my eldest son called me and said she had taken his siblings away. He said she told him they were going out to buy some things. She took the 11 months on her back and held the others by the hand. She has since not returned.”
Adebisi said the nanny was so much in a haste to whisk the children away that she did not allow them to eat.
Her husband, Leke, a businessman, said the nanny gave the family the contacts of her relatives, who they spoke with on the telephone.
The relatives were said to have agreed to meet with the Orekoyas during the week to finalise documentation.
He said, “We spoke with two people she introduced to us as her brother and sister. They confirmed that they were her relatives.
“They gave us a vague description of where they lived in Ikorodu. We agreed to do proper documentation this week.
“It was in less than 24 hours that she went away with the kids.
“She never gave us an idea that she was on an evil mission.
“Her spoken English was fluent. She said she had a National Diploma and just wanted to make some money so she could return to school.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the purported relatives had since remained unreachable on their telephone lines.
The family was said to have contacted the police from the Itire division, who reportedly told the family to wait for 24 hours.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the abduction, saying the police had started   investigation with a view to rescuing the children.
He said, “The police are making efforts to arrest the suspects and rescue the children.”

Ebola Facts: Top 7 myths busted

Ebola has officially been declared an international  emergency by the WHO, and has quickly become the biggest outbreak which started in West Africa. But as the disease ravages Africa and is seen to be moving to other parts of the world, there are a lot of myths and misinformation doing the rounds about the disease. So, to help set the record straight, we bust 7 of the commonest myths regarding Ebola.
Myth #1: Ebola is not real
Fact: Ebola is real and is caused due to a virus.
The virus is thought to have been spread from animals to man and is capable of being contagious even before any symptoms are seen. Having killed over 700 people, the Ebola virus is known to be fatal 90% of the times. This apathy was highlighted in a news report by NEWSY, where Dr Sanjay Gupta said in an interview with CNN that people in Africa have a severe lack of knowledge regarding the virus and how it spreads. They touch the bodies of people who have died due to the infection, and  get infected. This then spreads to people around them. Apart from that in a startling revelation, one person interviewed in Africa said that he did not believe that Ebola was real, while eating a piece of bush meat. As the disease continues killing, it is this belief that only makes the situation worse.
Myth #2: Ebola can only spread through blood
Fact: Ebola can spread through all body fluids including blood, sweat, semen, saliva and any other discharge.
This is mainly because of the way the virus attacks the body. Apart from affecting a person’s immune system, Ebola multiplies extremely fast and soon spreads throughout a person’s body. It then systematically infects all systems of the human body – barring the nervous system. This leads to bleeding and breakdown of all the defense mechanisms of the body. The infection becomes so severe that at a given time there can be up to 1000 viral cells in one drop of body fluid (especially blood).
Myth #3: Having safe sex can prevent you from getting infected by the Ebola virus
Fact: This is a false belief again. The Ebola virus spreads through all bodily fluids.
Therefore practicing safe sex with a person who has the infection will not prevent you from getting infected. Any contact with an infected person can lead to the infection. Things like touching, kissing and sex will cause the infection. The only thing a condom can help pervent is the fact that you might not catch the infection through semen, but the other sources will still cause Ebola.
Myth #4: There is a cure for Ebola
Fact: There is no known and FDA approved drug in the market to cure an infection caused due to the Ebola virus.
Ebola virus disease is spread due to a virus and so far, does not have a cure. While there is an experimental drug being used on patients in Africa called ZMapp, this drug is still in the testing stages and has not been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). ZMapp is a mixture of antibodies that are designed to target and inactivate the Ebola virus. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDS), the drug is combination of three different antibodies produced by exposing mice to fragments of the virus. Even though this drug has not yet passed FDA approval its use has helped a number of people and there have been cases of them showing signs of recovery.
Myth #5: Fasting will help cure Ebola
Fact: Absolutely not. Fasting can in fact worsen the condition
While there are studies that have found that fasting can help improve one’s immunity, but if done over a long period of time it can be detrimental for you. Not only will it make you weaker and more susceptible to the disease, but fasting over a period of time can lead a weakened immune system. This myth came about when a group of women activists in Africa said that they would fast for 14 days, after which the virus would not infect anybody world over. While obviously this did not work, it just went to prove that such beliefs can only serve to worsen an epidemic and do nothing to help it.
Myth #6: Ebola only affects Africans
Fact: Ebola affects humans irrespective of their racial background.
While the Ebola virus did first affect people from West Africa, it does not restrict itself to Africans alone. The virus is known to have spread to the US, Myanmar and other African countries. The disease has been declared an international emergency by the WHO and therefore is deadly for all humans.
Myth #7: You will not get Ebola if you have a healthy immune system
Fact: The state of your immune system does not dictate if you can or cannot get infected
A healthy immune system is definitely very important to prevent diseases, but the Ebola virus has become so potent that it can infect people with even the most robust immune system. Since the virus attacks the body and uses a person’s immune response to spread, the health of one’s immune system does not stop this virus from infecting a person.

OOU students Protest Over School Fees

Students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, are currently protesting in the state, demanding a reduction in their school fees. The students have barricaded the Presidential boulevard, the route leading to the office of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, saying they will not leave until the governor, who is said to be on his way to his office, addresses them.

The students were reportedly shot at and tear-gassed by soldiers this morning as they marched to the Governors office. After being tear-gassed, angry students started destroying public property. They had initially embarked on a peaceful protest, but turned violent after the teargas.
